This letter started me on my paper ephemera obsession - you can read about the full story if you click on the image.  As a  brief introduction the man is petitioning the family for their daughter's hand in marriage - and there are obviously complications.  It's such a sad letter but a real piece of social history and how simple medical conditions that can now be easily treated could stand in the way of a happy union.
